The contrastive value of lexical stress in visual word recognition: Evidence from spanish
Singular Langmuir-Hinshelwood reaction-diffusion problems. strong absorption under quasi-isothermal conditions
The steady state reaction-diffusion problem is considered for a permeable catalytic particle with Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetics under isothermal and quasi-isothermal conditions. It is known that there may be multiple solutions due to either strong adsorption or external thermal effects; in the first case, an arbitrarily large number of solutions may appear for symmetric pellets in two and three dimensions. An asymptotic analysis provides analytical expressions for the response curve of the particle and for the multiplicity bounds. The approximate results compare quite well with those computed numerically, even in cases in which the gauge functions of the approximation scheme are of the logarithmic type
Large activation energy analysis of the ignition of self-heating porous bodies
A large activation energy analysis of the problem of thermal ignition of self-heating porous bodies is carried out by means of a regular perturbation method. A correction to the well-known Frank-Kamenetskii estimate of the ignition limit is calculated, for symmetric bodies, by using similarity properties of the equations giving higher order terms in an expansion in powers of \/E (E = activation energy). Our estimate compares well with numerical results, and differs from others in the literature, which are not better than Frank-Kamenetskii's one from an asymptotic point of view. Dirichlet and Robin type of boundary conditions are considered. A brief analysis of the extinction problem for no reactant consumption is also presented
Experimental study of high-speed phenomena involving bubbles and free surfaces: bubble growth in microgravity and fast lifting of a plate from a water surface
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThis thesis addresses two different problems with a common link: both are experimental
studies where the effect of gravity does not play an important role. While the first one is in
microgravity conditions, the other one shows an acceleration much greater than gravity. As a
consequence, this dissertation is divided into two parts: growing bubbles in gas-supersaturated
liquid in microgravity and fast lifting of a plate from a water surface.
In the first part, the diffusion-driven growth of a dense bubble cloud is studied in
gas-supersaturated liquid in microgravity conditions. Understanding the diffusive-driven
dynamics is relevant in several modern technologies such as space manufacturing or chemistry
processes as well as in the formation of the small planetary bodies if we move to the geological
field. On Earth’s conditions, it is not possible to observe this purely diffusion-driven growth
for more than 100 ms since the gravity induces buoyancy effects that affects in these dynamics.
Thus, we carried out experiments in which a bubble cloud grows in aCO2-supersaturatedwater
in microgravity using of the drop tower of the German Center of Applied Space Technology
and Microgravity (ZARM). In the experiments, the evolution of the bubble cloud can be
observed for more than 3 s as well as their interactions and competition to access the CO2
available in the bulk liquid outside the cloud. Firstly, we show the details of the experimental
setup that we use to perform these experiments and some preliminary results related to the
individual growth of large bubbles and the time evolution of the gas volume of the cloud.
Then, we report the existence of different regimes where the bubble cloud presents different
growth rates in our experiments. Finally, we suggest a model that describes these regimes and
their corresponding growth rate, qualitatively.
In the second part, we address an experimental research regarding the fast lifting of
a circular disc from a water surface. For naval and ocean engineering it is essential to
model the force that a structure must withstand when it impacts or exits the water. Since
full-scale numerical simulations are usually impractical for this purpose, several analytical or
semi-analytical approaches have been developed over the years. Due to the complexity of the
free surface flows involving both numerical and analytical computations must be validated
against experiments. With this idea in mind, here we report the results of the experimental
measurements of the hydrodynamic force acting on a plate that is lifted from the water surface
and starts to move upwards suddenly at an acceleration much larger than gravity, a≫g.
Furthermore, we include the hydro-elastic effect that we observed in the experiments in the
solution of the asymmetric of the water exit problem. Our work focuses on the early stages
of the disc motion when the suction and inertial forces are the most relevant. Thus, the
experimental set-up is described firstly, then we compare the experimental results against the
linearised theory of the water exit proposed by Korobkin (2013). Finally, as a consequence of
the experimental observations of the hydroelastic interaction between the disc and the liquid,
the problem of the water exit is reformulated and solved taking into account this effect.
Cellular dynamics models of angiogenesis
Mención Internacional en el título de doctorCancer kills 26.4% of Spanish people. It is the second cause of death, just behind
diseases of the circulatory system, 28.3% [1]. The growth of new blood vessels from
the existing vasculature in response to chemical signals from a tumor is called tumorinduced
angiogenesis and it is closely related to cancer and metastasis. The growth rate
of a tumor is considerably increased in its vascular stage compared to its avascular and
solid stage, therefore treating cancer turns excessively difficult and the survival rates
rapidly decrease [2].
Among diseases that cause disability but not substantial mortality, age-related macular
degeneration may cause severe loss of vision or blindness in many people, particularly
the elderly. It is projected that 196 million people will be affected by age-related macular
degeneration in 2020, increasing to 288 million by 2040 [3], which is likely an underestimation
[4]. With age, Bruch’s membrane gets thicker and some damaged cells in
the retina become inflamed. The secretion of chemical signals from those cells due to
their inflammation induces angiogenesis, but the new blood vessels are disorganized and
leaky causing the loss of vision.
John Hunter was the pioneer in describing the vessel formation process in 1787 [5], but
the first person who coined the word “angiogenesis” was Arthur T. Hertig in 1935 [6]. He
was studying the formation of new blood vessel in the primary placenta of the macaque
monkey when this word was used for the first time. Years later, in 1971, Judah Folkman
hypothesized that tumors emit Tumor Angiogenic Factors (TAF) to attract blood vessels
to them [7]. This investigation triggered the research field of angiogenesis in cancer and
in 1989 one of the most important angiogenic factors was discovered: the Vascular
Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). Since then, drugs with antiangiogenic effects have
been investigated for cancer, age-related macular degeneration and other diseases, as it
is involved in more than seventy different diseases.
However, angiogenesis also occurs in normal and vital processes such as wound healing or
the growth of a fetus. The difference between physiological and pathological angiogenic
processes is a matter of balance. In a healthy process, angiogenesis develops to its proper
extent and then stops, while in pathological processes angiogenesis does not stop or it
does not develop sufficiently. Angiogenesis keeps the number of blood vessels needed in
balance: few blood vessels cause tissue death, while uncontrolled vascular proliferation
can lead to cancer, macular degeneration and other diseases.
Angiogenesis is a complex, multistep and well regulated process where biochemistry and
physics are intertwined. The process entails signaling in vessel cells being driven by both
chemical and mechanical mechanisms that result in vascular cell movement, deformation
and proliferation. In a later stage of angiogenesis, vessel cells rearrange to form lumen
and allow the perfusion of the blood inside the sprout. Depending on what induces the
angiogenesis, different environments and cells should be considered, for instance in the
retina. A detailed review of the processes involved in angiogenesis from the biological
point of view is given in section 1.1.
Beyond experimental investigations, mathematical models of angiogenesis try to help in
understanding the process and how the relevant mechanisms of angiogenesis interact.
The approach of some models focus on a single scale or a single process of those involved
to deepen the knowledge about it. Others span multiple scales or the whole process to
give an idea about how to prevent or favor angiogenesis. In section 1.2, we briefly review
the mathematical models of angiogenesis that have been used to date as well as those
when angiogenesis occurs in the retina and models of lumen formation, the late stage of
angiogenesis.
A crucial question about modeling is how to integrate the multiple scales and mechanisms
present in angiogenesis in a mathematical model. A model is expected to be
useful to explore methods for promoting and inhibiting angiogenesis. However, answering
this question with this expectation is not a simple task. Assembling all the processes
involved with their different time and length scales requires to develop a cellular dynamics
model combined with models for the continuum fields. We achieved this objective
by developing a hybrid cellular Potts model of early stage angiogenesis, given in chapter
2. In contrast to recent models, this mathematical and computational model is able to
explore the role of biochemical signaling and tissue mechanics. A exhaustive description
of the results of the numerical simulations complete the chapter 2.
The advantages of discovering the reasons why angiogenesis starts in the retina or inhibitory
mechanisms are innumerable. Unraveling the causes of neovascularization in
the retina and giving possible solutions for age-related macular degeneration are our
motivation to adapt the angiogenesis model of chapter 2 to the retina. In chapter 3, we
present the model and the numerical results.
If mathematical models of angiogenesis that incorporate multiple scales and cellular
signaling processes are not that common, those that also include lumen formation are
almost nonexistent. In chapter 4, we describe two models of lumen formation and their
results. The lumen formation in the first model takes place in a already developed sprout.
Although some restrictions in the model make its applications and possibilities limited,
its study is convenient to establish the basis of the second proposed model. In this second
model, the lumenization occurs while the sprout is developing and the pressure of the
blood is involved, following recent experiments of lumen formation during angiogenesis.
This model is work in progress, but we believe that showing the preliminary results in
chapter 4 may be interesting.
A critical step in the development of a mathematical and computational model is to
analyze the viability of its simulations. The simulations of the model in chapter 2 have
been carried out thanks to the parallel computing on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs),
as well as simulations of chapters 3 and 4. The large amount of square elements of the
grid, nodes, cells and sprouts make this type of computation suitable for these models.
The way they have been implemented is explained in chapter 5.
Finally, conclusions of this thesis and future work are drawn in the last chapter 6. This
chapter highlights and summarizes the research that has been carried out and proposes
future extensions and applications of this work.

Effects of high-intensity controlled burning in physical-chemical and biological soil properties in “Los Boquerones” Area
Premio extraordinario de Trabajo Fin de Máster curso 2021/2022. Máster en Ingeniería de MontesIn the last years, the use of fire to manage forest ecosystems has become more frequent in Europe. Fire has a great impact on the soil and therefore it is necessary to understand how controlled burns affect this non-renewable resource, essential for life in (forest) ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the main alterations in the physical-chemical and biological properties of the soil as a result of a high intensity-controlled burn in the "Los Boquerones" area (municipality of Villaviciosa de Córdoba) at two different times, immediately after the burn and eight months later (recovery). The specific objectives were to assess the spatial heterogeneity of the alterations of the different soil properties as well as addressing the relationship between fire occurrence and soil microbial communities. A grid of 12 points, representative of 1.4 ha, was and stablished on a hillside in Sierra Morena (Córdoba), with soil developed on sandstones and slates. At each point, thermal sensors were placed, and soil samples were collected at two depths (0 – 2 and 2 – 5 cm) before burning, immediately after burning and eight months later (recovery). Soil magnetic susceptibility, colour, pH, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, nutrient content and / or availability, between other, and their spatial and time variations were analysed. Soil pH, the main driver for soil microorganisms, was substantially increased in the first centimetres of the soil (0 – 2 cm) immediately after burning up to more than 2 units, and the increase was maintained eight months after the burn. This may be of interest for forest management (plant species selection) and disease control and prevention. In addition, the high-intensity burn had a positive short-term effect on some of the soil properties, such as nutrient availability for plants, which was considerably increased. In this sense, available phosphorus was increased more than 30 mg kg-1 after the burn in the uppermost 2 cm of soil, and although there was a decrease later, the amount of available P was still higher than before the burn eight months after the burn. A similar trend was observed for cation exchange capacity. The magnitude of the alterations in the soil indicators assessed was spatially explained by the behaviour of the fire during the controlled burning. The burn also affected soil microorganisms both directly and indirectly. Thus, the intensity of the fire as well as the alterations on soil properties determined their behaviour. In conclusion, the possible immediate and short to medium term effects of burning on the non-renewable resource soil should be considered for a more holistic management of fire in forest ecosystems, as its functionality and capacity to provide ecosystem services is largely altered by these events as a function of their intensity.

Metacognitive strategies in relation to the development of reading comprehension skills in Efl senior high school students in Ibarra- Ecuador
Identify how metacognitive strategies relate to the development of reading comprehension skills in EFL senior high school students.
